Personal Statement about APHA-SA:
I am very excited and honored to serve as Advancement Committee
Co-Chair. Obtaining and sharing information from other universities is
an integral part of gaining knowledge and making progress. I have a
vested interest in Public Health and mobilizing populations (both local
communities and student groups) to rally behind the cause for promoting
public health.
In the fall of 2003 I began working with the Advocacy and Legislation committee of the International Sector of the American Public Health Association. I perform research, attend talks and summarize books. I also co-wrote a legislative draft for a Global Disease Surveillance, Response and Prevention Network. I have been continuing my work this semester by moving toward other goals, which include meeting with members of Congress as well as legislative aids and publicizing our legislative proposal.
In addition, I have preformed a yearlong independent research study at the State University of New York at Stony Brook on aspirin and infarct size of the heart. My paper entitled, “Effects of Aspirin on the Cardioprotective Benefits of Arachidonic Acid in Ischemic Preconditioning,” was published in the “International Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine and Science” (2000, Vol. 3, No 2, pp 83-88).
I am deeply committed to and concerned with public health and look forward to working as Advancement Committee Co-Chair.
Elizabeth.
