Senior Associate, State Technical Assistance Group - AcademyHealth The Senior Associate would provide staff support for AcademyHealth's state technical assistance group primarily through the State Coverage Initiatives (SCI) program. The SCI program, a national initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, provides technical assistance and grants to help state governments with health insurance coverage expansions. ASPH is looking to all faculty to help identify talented students and recent graduates to encourage them to apply. The selected fellow will complete their violence prevention training experience at the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia. Fellowship positions are full-time opportunities whose duration is for a one year period. Fellowships may be extended for an additional year, pending available funding and mutual agreement by the fellow, CDC and ASPH. Overseas Fellowships in Global Health and Clinical Research – Due December 14, 2007 For the fifth year, the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) has once again teamed up with the NIH's Fogarty International Center (FIC) and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) to sponsor the FIC/Ellison Overseas Fellowship Program. This program offers overseas fellowship opportunities for doctoral-level students of public health and other health professions schools. This is an opportunity for highly motivated individuals to experience mentored research training at top-ranked NIH-funded research centers in a diverse group of countries, including Bangladesh, Botswana, Salvador, Brazil, Fortaleza, Brazil, Haiti, Chennai, India, China, Vellore, India, Kenya, Mali, West Africa, Lima, Peru (University of Washington), Lima, Peru (Johns Hopkins University), Durban, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, and Zambia. Applicants must prove enrollment in a doctoral-level program at an ASPH-member school of public health, have advanced standing in a U.S. medical (M3) or osteopathic school, or prove enrollment in a doctoral-level program at a U.S. school of optometry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, nursing or dentistry. BWF/ASTMH Postdoctoral Fellowship in Tropical Infectious Diseases—Deadline October 5, 2007 A grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF) allows the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) to award three postdoctoral fellowships each year. Each awardee will receive two years of support. Although the program will still target postdoctoral infectious diseases fellows, applicants who have completed training in other clinical specialties relevant to tropical medicine, such as internal medicine, pediatrics and OB/GYN, will also be considered. These postdoctoral fellowships provide support for individuals to conduct research in tropical infectious diseases and, on occasion, other clinical conditions unique to tropical medicine. Funding is available for two twelve-month periods. During the first year of BWF/ASTMH support, the fellow should commit at least 80 percent of his/her effort to research and spend at least three months working in a tropical or developing area. The second half of the award will be made once the grantee has entered a stable, entry-level faculty position. The second year of the BWF/ASTMH fellowship carries the same expectations that 80 percent of the fellow’s time will be spent on research effort and at least three months working in a tropical or developing area. These fellowships are not intended to provide funding for overseas clinical electives or experiences. The purpose of the BWF/ASTMH fellowships is to stimulate or sustain interest in research in tropical infectious diseases by individuals who are planning academic or other career paths ultimately focused on clinical research relevant to tropical or developing areas of the world. The fellowship offers $65,000 per year for two years to cover stipend, fringe benefits, and health insurance. In Year Two of the BWF/ASTMH fellowship, $10,000 is also available for supplies, communications and travel expenses. These fellowships do not allow indirect costs. The aim of the fellowship is to foster collaboration between NCHS staff and visiting scholars on a wide range of topics of mutual concern. The fellowship allows visiting scholars to conduct new and innovative analyses and participate in developmental and health policy activities related to the design and content of future NCHS surveys and offers access to the data resources provided by the CDC. Applicants may be at any stage in their career from doctoral students to senior investigators. Doctoral students must have completed course work and be at the dissertation phase of their program. Applicants must also demonstrate training and/or experience in health services research and methodology, reflecting disciplines such as public health, public administration, economics, sociology, health care administration and the behavioral sciences. ASPH to Hold Student Services Workshop—November 2, 2007 The ASPH student affairs council is organizing a Student Services Workshop that will be held in Washington, D.C. on Friday, November 2. The workshop will be hosted by the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services. MPHTC “Budgeting and Accounting” Online Course—October 1 – November 18, 2007 The Michigan Public Health Training Center (MPHTC) will offer a seven-week mentored, online course called "Budgeting and Accounting" from October 1 to November 18, 2007. This course is designed to cover the development and use of budgets as planning and management tools for organizations. Considering the organization as a firm that must be managed within a set of financial constraints, participants will develop an understanding of those constraints, in terms of costs and revenues. Participants will learn how to use various measures of cost in making, planning, and operating decisions for their organizations. As part of the course assignments, participants will apply concepts in the course to situations faced by their organizations. The courses offered by the MPHTC have been made possible through funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Bureau of Health Professions. 5. 4th Annual Johns Hopkins Fall Institute in Health Policy and Management—November 12-30, 2007 The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Public Agency of Barcelona, in collaboration with the Pompeu Fabra University, have established a Hopkins Fall Institute on Policy and Management in Barcelona, Spain. The 4th Annual Fall Institute will take place from November 12-30, 2007. Senior faculty from the U.S. and European institutions will provide 12 courses of two, three or four day’s duration in four major areas: Public Health Policy and Management, Environmental Protection Policy and Management, Reduction of Health Inequalities: European and North American Strategies, and Advanced Methods and Techniques in Management and Policy. ASPH to Hold Student Leadership Development Workshop – Registration Deadline September 21, 2007 The ASPH Student Affairs Council is organizing a Student Leadership Development Workshop which will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Washington, DC on Monday, November 5 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., in conjunction with the ASPH Annual Meeting. The workshop is being planned as a skill building opportunity for student leaders at ASPH-member schools. The agenda will include a plenary session by Dr. Ivan Walks, former Chief Health Officer of the District of Columbia, on leadership skills, as well as an interactive assessment using the Student Leadership Practices Inventory. The workshop is being planned by members of the ASPH Student Leadership Workshop in partnership with the National Leadership Network. Commonwealth Fund/Harvard University Fellowship in Minority Health Policy—Deadline January 2, 2008 Supported by The Commonwealth Fund, administered by the Minority Faculty Development Program at Harvard Medical School, the 2008-2009 Fellowship in Minority Health Policy is designed to prepare physicians, particularly minority physicians, for leadership roles in formulating and implementing public health policy and practice on a national, state or community level. Five one-year, degree-granting fellowships will be awarded per year. Fellows will complete academic work leading to a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree at the Harvard School of Public Health and, through additional program activities, gain experience in and understanding of major health issues facing minority, disadvantaged, and underserved populations. The fellowship also offers a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree at John F. Kennedy School of Government to physicians possessing an MPH. It is expected that this fellowship will support the development of a cadre of leaders in minority health, well-trained academically and professionally in public health, health policy, health management, and clinical medicine, as well as actively committed to careers in public service.
